Partial Resumption of Operations at Soma LNG Terminal (Resumption of Gas Supply to the Pipeline and LNG delivery by tank trucks)

Japan Petroleum Exploration Co., Ltd. (JAPEX) announced that the Soma LNG terminal (Shinchi-machi, Fukushima Prefecture), which was temporarily shut down following the earthquake off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture that occurred on February 13, 2021, resumed operations today for the supply of regasified gas from liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the gas pipeline network, and LNG delivery by tank trucks. The supply of LNG regasified gas used as fuel for power generation to the Fukushima Natural Gas Power Plant (owned by Fukushima Gas Power Ltd.: FGP), located adjacent to the Soma LNG Terminal, is still suspended.

Please refer to the history and the Soma LNG terminal and FGP power plant's latest situation since the earthquake.

1. Soma LNG terminal: Resumed gas supply to the pipeline network and delivery by LNG tank trucks on the afternoon of Tuesday, February 16

After the earthquake, we temporarily suspended operations to confirm the LNG terminal's safety and have been assessing the situation inside the terminal, inspecting the facilities, and conducting a series of trial operations, starting with the facilities whose safety has been confirmed. The facilities for LNG regasification, supplying gas to the pipeline network, and loading facility of the LNG tank trucks have been under trial operation since yesterday, February 15. As a result, it was confirmed that there were no safety issues. Today, the facility resumed its operation for the LNG regasified gas supply to the gas pipeline network and delivery by LNG tank trucks.

The resumption of the supply of LNG regasified gas, which is the fuel for power generation, to the FGP power plant adjacent to this terminal will be scheduled depending the progress of the assessment and inspection of the facilities for the fuel delivery.

2. Fukushima Natural Gas Power Plant (owned by Fukushima Gas Power Ltd.: FGP): Operation suspended

The power generation facilities were automatically shut down after the earthquake and are still inactive.

No damage to the facilities that would interfere with the power plant's operation has been confirmed by the confirmation and inspection by FGP.

However, the supply of LNG regasified gas from the Soma LNG terminal to the power plant is still temporarily suspended. We will continue to assess the status of the resumption of the fuel delivery for power generation at the terminal, consulting with related parties.

JAPEX will continue to place the highest priority on safety as we work toward the resumption of operations at the suspended facilities.
