Since its foundation, JAPEX has been engaged in exploration and production (E&P) as well as transportation and supply, and is now expanding the range of energy we handle to include electric power by using the technology and capability it has accumulated through E&P. We are also working to establish and commercialize carbon-neutral technologies in order to contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society.

  • Hokkaido Oil and Gas Field

    JAPEX has been producing crude oil and natural gas in the Yufutsu Oil and Gas Field in Tomakomai City, Hokkaido.The natural gas produced in the Yufutsu Oil and Gas field is supplied through a pipeline network, together with liquefied natural gas (LNG) vaporized at the Yufutsu LNG Receiving Terminal. JAPEX also produces LNG from some of the natural gas produced in the Yufutsu Oil and Gas Field to adjust supply and demand.

    Domestic Gas Supply Network

    JAPEX has built the domestic gas supply network to supply natural gas and LNG mainly to local gas distributors and large-scale clients.To respond to varying demands and needs for natural gas and LNG, which are considered to have the least environmental impact of fossil fuels, we have a system to supply natural gas produced at our domestic gas fields and LNG procured from abroad to our clients using a combination of multiple transportation methods.

    JAPEX serves various LNG transportation and supply methods, such as the LNG satellite system to transport by tank trucks, LNG tank containers on railway, and LNG bunkering for supplying as a marine fuel.

    Yufutsu LNG Receiving Terminal/Yufutsu LNG Plant

    Yufutsu LNG Receiving Terminal / Yufutsu LNG Plant have served as a hub to ensure stable supply of natural gas within Hokkaido, receiving and vaporizing LNG, supplying vaporized LNG gas to gas pipelines, and shipping LNG in its original liquefied form.While Yufutsu LNG Terminal receives LNG transported by coastal vessels, Yufutsu LNG Plant stores and vaporizes LNG, supplies vaporized LNG gas to a network of gas pipelines, and loads LNG onto tank trucks and railway tank containers.

    Abashiri Biomass 2nd & 3rd Power Plants

    This is a biomass power generation project to develop and operate two 9,900kW class biomass power plants, which use 100% domestic wood chips for fuel, in Abashiri City, Hokkaido.JAPEX participates in the project as the largest shareholder for the business entities. In addition, our 100% subsidiary has been entrusted the asset management work of the two power plants from the business entities.

    Mega Solar Power Plant in Hokkaido

    JAPEX currently is involved in operation of two mega-solar power plants in Tomakomai City, Hokkaido.Tomakomai City has a unique set of advantages preferable to solar power generation, i.e., longer sunlight hours, less snow, and lower temperature.

    Akita/Yamagata Oil and Gas Fields

    JAPEX has been producing crude oil and natural gas at three oil and gas fields in Akita Prefecture and one in Yamagata Prefecture.Akita Prefecture is also considered one of the areas with potential for shale oil (tight oil) development and production. To date, we have conducted shale oil (tight oil) development and production verification tests in and around some of oil and gas fields in Akita Prefecture.

    Soma LNG Terminal

    Soma LNG Terminal is the first large-scale LNG terminal in Fukushima Prefecture, comprising two LNG tanks with a capacity of 230,000 kiloliters, the largest class ground type-type tanks in Japan. The terminal receives and stores LNG from abroad, vaporizes LNG and sends out LNG vaporized gas into pipelines, and ship LNG in its original liquefied form. Soma LNG Terminal is the first terminal of our own that is provided with a receiving jetty for ocean-going LNG carriers. The Terminal, which is central to our domestic gas distribution network, has contributed to increasing the volume and stability of natural gas supply in Japan.

    Fukushima Natural Gas Power Plant

    Fukushima Natural Gas Power Plant, located at Soma Port No.4 Wharf, is an LNG-fueled power plant with a maximum output of 1.18 million kilowatts. The plant is managed and operated by Fukushima Gas Power Co., Ltd. (FGP,) which has five shareholders, led by JAPEX.

    Niigata Oil and Gas Fields

    JAPEX has been producing crude oil and natural gas at five oil and gas fields in Niigata Prefecture.The natural gas produced is supplied through our gas pipeline network. To effectively use the natural gas produced to adjust for seasonal fluctuations in supply and demand, we also store natural gas underground in our gas field.

    Gas Underground Storage

    JAPEX has been conducting natural gas underground storage at the Shiunji gas field in Niigata Prefecture to flexibly address fluctuations in natural gas demand and emergencies. The injected natural gas is re-produced and supplied when needed.

  • Indonesia: Kangean Project

    This is a project to develop and produce mainly natural gas in Kangean Block offshore East Java of Indonesia.JAPEX acquired interests in the block in 2007 through an investment in Energi Mega Pratama Inc. (EMPI) to participate in the project.

    United States: Tight Oil Development

    This is a tight oil (shale oil) development project in the south of Texas, USA promoted by the operator Marathon Oil Corporation.In 2012, JAPEX acquired development interests through our local subsidiary, JAPEX (U.S.) Corp. (JUS) to participate in the project.

    Russia: Sakhalin 1 Project

    This is a project to develop and produce oil and natural gas in the Chayvo, Odoptu, and Arkutun-Dagi fields off the east coast of Sakhalin Island, Russia, with Exxon Neftegas Ltd. as an operator.JAPEX invests in Sakhalin Oil and Gas Development Co., Ltd. (SODECO), which is a member of the Sakhalin-1 Project.

    U.K. North Sea: Seagull Project

    This is a project to develop crude oil and natural gas promoted by Neptune E&P UK Ltd. as an operator in the U.K. North Sea Offshore Block (commonly known as Seagull Block) off the coast of Aberdeen, U.K.JAPEX acquired interests in the block through our local subsidiary JAPEX UK E&P Ltd. (JUK) in 2014 to participate in the project from the exploration stage.

    This is a project to develop and produce crude oil at Garraf Oil Field in the southern Iraq. JAPEX has been engaged in the crude oil development and production ay Garraf Oil Field in Iraq since it acquired production and development rights in 2009 jointly with the operator PETRONAS, Malaysia's state-owned oil company.
