In response to global warming worldwide, initiatives to reduce greenhouse gases (CO₂) are required.

CO₂ Reduction Targets

In Japan, efforts are rapidly progressing toward achieving the following two CO₂ reduction targets.

The Paris Agreement

  • A global framework for climate change after 2020, adopted at COP21 (the 21st Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC) in November 2015
  • Japan signed in April 2016 and set targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 26% by 2030 and by 80% by 2050 compared to FY2013 levels

2050 NET Zero

  • In October 2020, the Government of Japan (Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga) announced a policy to make greenhouse gas emissions effectively zero (carbon neutral) by 2050
  • Based on this policy, public and private efforts toward achieving carbon neutrality have accelerated furthe
