Recruiting

What is the recruiting process like?
First, access our company website or sign up to our recruiting navigation website. We will send you an Entry Sheet as soon as we are ready. Please write in Japanese.
For technical staff, we tend to evaluate applicants by their English skills, aptitude test, specialty test, an essay and interviews. Although a certain amount of knowledge is required for the aptitude test and specialty test, we feel that personality is important. Therefore, the interviews are regarded as most important.
How many foreign students has JAPEX been hiring?
We hired a non-technical staff in FY2013, and 2 in FY2014. We have just started hiring foreign students, but would like to continue this trend.
How can I get a resident card?
By Japanese law, you must change your residence qualification, but JAPEX will support the necessary paperwork.

Training and education

What is the new recruit training and education system like?
JAPEX’s human resources development begins with the group training. Then, non-technical staff are set for on-the-job training, while technical staff (G&G) and technical staff (Engineering) will undergo specialized training for 6 months and 12 months respectively. Additionally, we provide opportunities for studying overseas, language training, self-enlightenment courses, and other seminars that employees can take.
I am uneasy with my Japanese. Can I apply?
If you are able to have daily conversations in Japanese, you should be alright. After entering JAPEX, we will provide you with opportunities for Japanese learning. But we require N1 level of JLPT.

Pay and employment

Will I be able to request which department to be assigned/transferred to?
After hiring, the Human Resources Department will assign employees to their respective departments according to their aptitude. Should you wish to transfer to another department afterward, you will be able to discuss it with your superiors through career development interviews. The Human Resources Department will decide on employees’ department transfers, taking into account the wishes of the person concerned, his/her ability, his/her aptitude, the company’s personnel plan, requests from other departments and so on. Not everyone will get to go to where they want, but showing your passion during the career development interviews will work positively.
Is there a chance to work abroad?
As an E&P company, you can expect going on a business trip, or even, being posted to an overseas office to work on a project. In the case of technical staff, supervising overseas projects can be especially long-lasting. On the other hand, there are departments that have little to do with going abroad, but as JAPEX tends to post and re-post employees to different departments often, at the end of the day, there will be plenty of opportunities to work abroad.
Where will the technical staff be assigned?
This time, people involved in the development-related power generation project will be assigned to the Soma Port Natural Gas Power Station (tentative name) in Fukushima prefecture. G&G staff will undergo 6 months of training while Engineering staff undergo a year of it, before being assigned to the HQ office or district offices. Generally, you will work at a number of domestic drilling sites and production facilities, since operational experience is vital. The assignment and transfer of staff is done according to the needs of each department as well as the request of the employee concerned. Some of you may be assigned to the Research Center in Makuhari, Chiba prefecture.
Is there a good system to support me and my kids?
We have been making an effort to make a work-life balance for both men and women. The childbirth and childcare support systems are available, and include the following:
・A 6 week and 8 week vacation for pre- and post-childbirth, respectively
・Parental leave
・Reduction in working hours for child care
・Nursing leave
We also have leaves for elderly care in order to support the employees’ private lives.
